Department of Biotechnology

The biotechnology lab has spacious with good modern tables covered by mosaic floor mating and can accommodate 60-70 students at a time. The biotechnology department has their own well furnished and automatic equipments labs of genetics, Microbiology, Bio- Chemistry and other related subjects.

International Market of Biotechnology

437400 U.S jobs of these 150800 jobs were generated directly by biotechnology companies, while the remaining 2,86,600 jobs were generating by companies supplying in put to the industry, or by companies providing goods and services to biotechnology employees.

Agricultural Biotechnology generated 21900 jobs about $2.3 billion in revenues, including the contribution of companies supplying to industry or goods and services to employees.

Biotechnology is key industry for the future. Germany is already a leader in biotech. The study found no new risk to human health or the environment food derived from genetically modified crops is as safe as conventional feed and with appropriate regulation, may even be safer than the conventional. Biotechnology companies directly employed 150800 employees, but there purchases from other companies and the spending of their employees generated an additional 287000 jobs. So that the total jobs generation attributable to the biotechnology industry is 4,37,000.

Public companies generated 105,200 jobs, $ 14 billion in revenues and $ 10 billion in personal income, while there impact was 305,100 jobs, $ 32 billion in revenues and $20 billion in personal income. The biotechnology industry has grown rapidly in recent years essentially doubling in size between1993-1999.

VIEWS OF SOME INTERNATIONAL PERSONALITIES / ORGANIZATION ABOUT BIOTECHNOLOGY

1 Dr. Ben Ngubane, minister(Arts, Culture, science and Technology) : “ The first century of the new million will belong----- also to biotechnology which will bring advance in human and animal health, agriculture and food production, manufacturing and environmental management.”

2 Gerhard Schreuder (German Chancellor):-
“Biotechnology is a key industry for the future. Germany is already a leader in Biotech with out Biotechnology. Germany can hardly ensure well being for its future generation.”

3 United Nations Development Program (UNDP) “ Break through applications in Medicine and agriculture have huge potential for accelerating human development. But this potential will be truly tapped only biotechnology is used to address the key healthy and agriculture challenges of poor country.”

4 European Union Parliament:- “ The study found no new risk to human health or the environment food derived from genetically modified crops is as safe as conventional feed and with appropriate regulation, may even be safer than the conventional.”

Achievements of Indian Biotechnology Research

During the decade 1990-2000, Products, process and services in the field of biotechnology in India became a reality. Some of the achievements of biotechnology research in India are ------

1. DNA Fingerprinting has been developed Dr Lalji Singh at CCMB, Hyderabad.

2. A number of Vaccines against disease are being developed BIBCOL Bharat Immunological and Biological Corporation LTD) at Bulandshar for oral polio vaccine.

3. Bio-pesticides and Bio-fertilizer are being developed to meet the nitrogen demands and also to protect soil texture.

4. Sericulture involving improvement in production and quality of Indian Silk has become possible.

5. Successful Use of Embryo transfer has became possible to give birth to improved buffalos claves.

6. The diagnostic kit for filarial, hepatitis B, malaria etc- has been released.

Micro propagation of trees has been made possible at commercial scale for bamboos at Delhi University and for teak, eucalyptus at TE

The sector offers career opportunities, both in research and industry, particularly in area of medicine and agriculture. The work of biotechnologist is scientific and research oriented. Research and development, quality control, clinical research manufacturing and production, regulatory affairs etc.

A biochemical development engineer is involved in new product scale up, process improvement, technology transfer, and process validation activities.

A number of agriculture, dairy, horticulture industry also exists which would employ biotechnologist. Some drug companies in biotechnology like Dabur, Ranbaxy, Hindustan lever and etc- which have their R&D units would be another area for qualified biotechnologist.

Opportunities for biotechnology students exist in agri-based industries involved production of transgenic plant, seed industries, and tissue culture unites, agri-chemicals as bio-fertilizers and biotechnology industry.

Environmental amelioration, pharma industry and diagnosis, new drug molecules, clinical research etc. The success of a teaching program is primarily judged by the quality of education imparted and placement of students passing out. These program have flourished as students coming out of these program qualify in UGC-CSIR national entrance test (NET) for junior research fellowship (JRF).

A biotechnologist may work in government organization like ICAR, DBT, DST, and other institute through sponsored projects.
